Hepatitis B is found wor/dwide, even in remote areas. its incidence increases in areas of high population density and poor hygine. The majör sources of this infection are carriers and clients with the acute process. Contact with the serum of an infected client is the majör mode of transmission. The virüs also may be transmitted by other body fluids, such as saliva and semen. Health care workers are at high risk for hepatitis B because of theire close contact with the blood of carriers. Many health care facilities use disposable eguipment, especially needles and syringes, to reduce hepatitis transmission. Nondisposible equipment must be sterilized to prevent virüs transmission. All health care workers, of course, follow the Centers for Disease Control universal precautions.
