As differences between family expectations and real situation increase, hardships that they undergo increase and coping with the real situation becomes more difficult. This definitive-type study; aiming to determine hardships undergone by families with mentally retarded children and determine the relationship of socio-demographical factors in the undergone hardships; was carried out between 01.04.03 and 31.02.05. Universe of the study consists of parents of a total of 180 mentally retarded children educated at 3 Special Education and Rehabilitation Centers that provide education for mentally retarded children in İzmir city center. Parents were interviewed in the study, and 110 parents who wanted to join the study consisted the sample group. Forms developed by researchers were used in collection of the study. In the study, it was determined that %54,5 of the families are concerned about the future, %48,2 always have fear of an accident or injury for he child; and %37,3 never receive any social support from their surroundings. Families with mentally retarded children should not be left alone with their own feelings and problems. Public health nurses in family nurse applications; planning and application of attempts in accordance with family’s needs have priority.
