The Role of Sociodemographic Factors and Perceived Social Support in the Prediction of Self-Concept of the Elderly Living in Nurising Homes Objective: Aging may bring about psychologically distressing changes to the individual’s life. Continuation of the social interactions and social support has an adaptive function for the elderly. Considering that self-concept builds upon the social interactions, the importance of social support for the elderly becomes even clear. When the changes in biological, psychological and social life due to aging overlap with the social isolation due to moving into a nursinghome, a cumulative negative effect on the elderly’s self-concept may ocur as a result. The current study is interested in the prediction of self-concept of the elderly living in nursing-homes, using sociodemographics and perceived social support as the predictive variables. Method: The sample is composed of 76 elderly living in nursing-homes in İstanbul. The data was collected by using a battery composed of ‘Sociodemographic Form’, ‘Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support’ and ‘Social Comparison Scale’. Results: It was found that sociodemographics and perceived social support signiicantly contribute to the prediction of self-concept in the elderly. Conclusion: This study contributes to the understanding of the risk and protective factors in terms of self-concept of the elderly living in nursing-homes.
