“Arada Kalmak”: Kalıcı Bir Liminalite Örneği Olarak Türk Modernleşmesi
2019

Journal of History and Future
Author:
Abstract:

"Rest in the middle": Turkish modernization as a permanent example of limitation
2019
Author:
Abstract:

This study claims that the 19th century was a transitional period for the modernization of Turkey. Instead of the stages formed by the influence of social and cultural dynamics, unlike Western Europe, the Ottoman State has entered this transitional period in a very short time and through macro policies, not a modern social order, but a permanent terminality, and a social reality built between the old and the new, the east and the west, modernity and tradition. The study, to explain this fundamental thesis, first of all, in the context of the Westernization policies of the Ottoman State. It is intended to treat the structural and cultural change in the century as a process that consists of violations, crisis, terminality and rebuilding stages, and all this process in which modernization occurs is intended to be perceived as a transitional period. In addition, instead of a modern social order of the transition period, it aims to address the Westernization project, which resulted in the production of permanent limitation, with its general lines step by step. To deal with social change as a process and a transitional period, Van Gennep and Turner’s process approaches, especially the concepts of terminality, were based on the permanent terminality concept that Szakolczai considered modernity as an unfinished change to indicate the durability of the state of interruption created by modernization.

“living Through The In-between”: Turkish Modernity As A Sample Of Permanent Liminality
2019
Author:
Abstract:

This study claims that the 19th century was a transitional period for Turkish modernisation. Furthermore, it claims that unlike Western Europe, the transition of the Ottoman state to this period of passage in a very short period of time and through macro-politics, rather than the stages shaped by the influence of social and cultural dynamics and spreading over a long period, revealed a permanent liminality instead of modern social order and built a social reality between old and new, East and West, modernity and tradition. In order to explain this basic thesis, first of all, the study intends to deal with the structural and cultural change of the Ottoman Empire in the context of Westernisation policies in the 19th century as a process consisting of breach, crises, liminality/ redress and restructuring, and to conceptualise the whole process of modernisation as a period of passage. It also aims to point out the Westernization project of the transitional period, which results in producing permanent liminality rather than a modern social order. In order to explain social change as a process and transition period, Van Gennep and Turner’s approaches, especially the concept of liminality will be applied. In order to point out the persistence of the liminal state created by modernisation, Szakolczai’s concept of permanent liminality will be used.
