Abstract:

2019
Author:
Abstract:

Digital games today have entered the houses and children’s lives and brought many discussions with them.  Although there is a lot of discussion about the use and effects of digital games for pre-school children, research on the subject is limited. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to study the preferences of the parents for their children by focusing on digital games. The study included 351 parents who continued their child's childhood school. The data is collected with the Parental Game Preference Scale developed by the parallel comparisons method.  In the analysis of the research data, two-way ANOVA and MANOVA were used. Research findings have shown that parents prefer the most building games for their children, while at least the digital games. The educational and working conditions of the parents and the age and gender of the children are related to the play preferences.  The game preferences and the periods allocated to different types of games per day have been found related.  According to these findings, it was suggested to build and spread the social spaces where families can play with their children.

Abstract:

Digital play has entered into houses and the lives of children and brought many debates with it. In spite of debates the number of research is very limited. For this reason, the purpose of this research is to examine parents’ play preferences for their children by focusing on the digital play. 351 parents having a child attending preschools participated in this research. The data were collected through the Parental Play Preference Scale developed by the paired comparison method. Two-way ANOVA and MANOVA were used for analysis. Research findings showed that parents mostly favored constructive play and digital play received the lowest preference scores.  It has been determined that education and working conditions of parents and age and gender of children were influential on play preferences.  Play preferences and daily times for different play types were found to be related. In the light of these findings, home-based awareness-raising activities and the creation and dissemination of social areas were suggested.
