Abstract The article deals with the performance of male teachers in an institution of Early Education in Colombia and, in the light of gender theories, sought to understand the representations of masculinities and femininities that emerge from the perception of men and women about male teaching in this educational stage. The investigation was carried out from August to December 2017 and the data were produced through interviews with four teachers (two male teachers and two female teachers). The interviews show that the relationships between male teachers and the children are free from prejudice or interdiction, however, the analyses indicate that the work of these professionals is different from that performed by female teachers and the gender specificities that are constituted in the institutional space cause tensions and ambivalences.
