The problem in the multilevel inverter is none other than the appearance of harmonics in the frequency spectrum, especially at low ordered frequencies which result in poor power quality. In this paper, analysis has been made by using two types of pulse width modulation (PWM) strategies for diode clamped and cascaded multilevel inverters. The important objective of this work is to know the most relevant control and modulation method and also to find the competent inverter topology between a Diode clamped multilevel and cascaded multilevel inverter. Total harmonic distortion (THD) is the performance metric used in this comparison. The five-level diode-clamped and cascaded multilevel inverters have been executed using MATLAB/Simulink. The simulation results of both multilevel inverters using Sinusoidal PWM and Modified reference PWM techniques have been presented. Finally, the comparison of THDs for diode-clamped and cascaded multilevel inverter topologies for SPWM and MPWM has been presented.
