Natural killer (NK) cells which are a component of the immune system are capable of killing tumor cells and virally infected cells. The activation of NK cells is regulated by the balance of activating and inhibitory surface receptors. NKG2D is one of the these activating receptors. The ligands of NKG2D are the human class I like molecules MICA and MICB which are encoded within the human MHC. MICA and MICB are not expressed on normal cells but up-regulated under condition of stress such as heat schock and viral infection. Therefore, NKG2D ligands are defined as stress-induced antigens.
