Abstract:

Technological developments have made change inevitable in the 21st century. The internet, tablets and smartphones have brought a new dimension to the concept of citizenship by transcending geographical boundaries. In this context, the importance of social studies textbooks has increased even more which are important teaching materials for capturing the digital opportunities offered by information technologies and raising the awareness of being a digital citizen. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of the primary school 4st grade social studies textbook in raising digital citizenship awareness in terms of the sub-dimensions of the concept of digital citizenship. Document analysis method one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the study. In the analysis of the data, descriptive analysis and content analysis method were used to determine the concepts and topics of digital citizenship taking into account the 4st grade social studies textbook for the 2022-2023 academic year. The findings obtained from the research were evaluated in the context of nine sub-dimensions of digital citizenship. The results determined that the social studies textbook was not sufficiently inclusive in the sub-dimensions of digital citizenship, and the concepts and topics were distributed unevenly across themes. The most striking result of this research was that the social studies textbook did provide sufficient content on raising digital citizens in the 21st century.
