The objective of this study is to divide Turkish geographers from different generations to the historicity of the discipline from the perspective of the actor groups. In the study, actors performing within the discipline are defined by a cohorted approach. In this type of identification-historical framework, the actors have tried to determine the number of generations in Turkish geography, based on the doctoral thesis preparation periods, and the place in the history of the discipline of each generation. According to this, Turkish geography is represented by 18 generations from the beginning to the present day. The findings show that the discipline experienced a maturity period until the 9th generation. It shows that it has grown quantitatively from generation to generation, that there is no linear relationship between the number of members of any generation and the generational productivity, and that generations in the universities around the world, which were mainly involved in the academic re-production process in the 1990s, entered a process of maturity over time. In the study, the conclusion is that the third generation in Turkish geography has a great weight and has created a path dependency in terms of discipline, which has begun to disrupt from the first half of the 2000s; in this regard, the trend of innovation in Turkish geography is mainly limited to the last 3 generations.
In this study, generations of Turkish geographers have been identified to illuminate the disciplinary history. Here, scholars have been defined by using a cohort approach. By taking into account standard Ph.D period, number of generations identified. Results show that Turkish geography is represented by 18 generations since 1915. Tendencies of generations show that geography has experienced a maturity period up to the 9th generation, it has grown and expanded since the 14th generation, there is no linear relationship between the number of members of generations and their productivity, and the generations in the peripherial universities experienced a period of maturation. It is concluded that the 3rd generation in Turkish geography had a great weight and created a sort of path-dependency which started to change by the first half of the 2000s and it seems that the trends of innovation in the discipline are essentially confined to the last 3 generations.
