Objective: This study was planned as an observational study to determine nurses' practices to measure blood glucose levels. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted between December 2016 and June 2017 in a university hospital. The study sample comprised 60 nurses who worked in the internal diseases and surgical clinics, and intensive care units of a university hospital and were observed how they measured blood glucose levels. To collect the study data 2 tools were used: One of them is the "Observation Form" developed in line with the literature. It includes the steps in the measurement of blood glucose levels. The other tool is the “Personal Information Form” which consists of items questioning nurses’ sociodemographic characteristics such as age, gender, clinic they work in, clinical working experience, and education situation. The data obtained from the study were analyzed in the SPSS 21.0 program. Results: Monitoring the nurses whether they performed blood glucose level measurement steps appropriately demonstrated that 90% of them did not ask patients whether they washed their hands before the procedure. While 60% of the nurses participating in the study did not clean the patient's fingers with alcohol-soaked cotton wool, of the nurses who did it, 21.7% wiped the finger with dry cotton wool without waiting for the alcohol to dry, 45% did not press down the finger to be pricked, 100% used a single-use lancet, cleaned the first blood drop with dry cotton wool, put the next blood drop on a test strip, loaded the test strip into the blood glucose meter, placed a piece of dry cotton wool on the pricked finger and put away the materials they used appropriately. Conclusion: In the study, it was concluded that the participating nurses did not perform the asepsis principles required for the blood glucose level measurement. It is recommended that in clinics, standard procedures to measure blood glucose levels should be developed and that documents containing the steps of the procedure should be prepared.
