oguz Türklerinin en büyük destanlarından biri olan Dede Korkut, Oguzların tarihi ve içtimai hususiyetlerini ele alan abidevi bir eserdir. Destanlar, Türklerin tarihi karakteri ve hususiyetleri üzerine emsalsiz bir kaynak olma özelligini taşımaktadır. Her bir hikaye, hatta bir kelime dahi bizler için tarihi ipuçları verecek bir öneme sahiptir. Diger Türk destanlarına nazaran daha geniş bir alana yayılan ve hemen hemen bütün Türk boyları arasında özünü muhafaza ederek yaşıyan Dede Korkut ve destanı, bu vasfıyla Türk dünyasının adeta hüviyet cüzdanİ olma durumundadır.
