Abstract:

The qualities that psychological consultants need to have in the process of meeting the requirements of their professions have long been the characteristic of being the subject of research. From here, the research is aimed at studying the relationship between the emotional intelligence levels of the candidates for psychological consultants and the self-capacity of psychological consultants. Furthermore, the study of psychological counseling candidates’ emotional intelligence levels and psychological counseling self-capacity in terms of various variables constitutes another of the research objectives. The research has provided a voluntary participation of a total of 200 psychological consultants from four universities, including Sakarya University, Düzce University, Uludağ University and Sabahattin Zaim University. Psychological consultancy candidates consist of students who are studying in the last classes of the University's Leadership and Psychological Consultancy bachelor's programmes and who have received the course "Personal Psychological Consultancy Practices". In the framework of the study, the data was collected with the Schutte Emotional Intelligence Test and the Psychological Counseling Self-Efficiency Scale. The research has applied the scanning method and the data has been analyzed in the SPSS program. To test the data, Spearman's sequence differences correlation analysis and Mann Whitney U test were applied. The study found a statistically meaningful relationship between the emotional intelligence levels of the candidates for psychological counseling and the low scale of psychological counseling self-capacity (help skills self-capacity, self-capacity and challenges related to session management) and the overall scale of psychological counseling self-capacity in the positive direction. It has also been shown that women’s help skills self-sufficiency scores are statistically higher than men’s scores; those who participate in volunteer internships their emotional intelligence levels and help skills their self-sufficiency are statistically higher than others.
