Abstract:

The modern political philosophy, which appears as a response to the classical political philosophy, according to Strauss becomes evident along with the modernity led by Machiavelli. Influenced by Machiavelli's thoughts on the classical political philosophy, Hobbes tries to apply mathematical method, society and humanity by linking modern natural sciences to political understanding. Unlike Machiavelli, who cuts the relationship between natural law and politics, Hobbes rebuilds the natural right conception. Hobbes, who is the starting point of the “violent fear of death”, the most fundamental feeling of man, instead of the classical understanding that focuses on the task, adopts a right-centered political understanding. The aim of this study, which focuses on Strauss' interpretation, is to question the changes that political philosophy has undergone and on which foundations Hobbes built the modern political philosophy. For this theory of Hobbes, called the first power philosophy, has also been the pioneer of the transition from a decent life design to a comfort-focused life design by separating “religion” and “politics”.
