Abstract:

The mosque, madrasa, and bathhouse commissioned by Süleyman Pasha in İzmit have regrettably succumbed to the inexorable passage of time disparately. The madrasa has undergone complete obliteration, leaving no vestiges in contemporary times. In contrast, the bathhouse, though divested of its originality, still maintains its physical presence at the same site. Notably, the mosque emerges as the most meticulously preserved edifice among them. Since its inception, Süleyman Pasha Mosque has remained actively utilized, subject to periodic refurbishments and reparations necessitated by its susceptibility to wear, particularly attributable to its wooden composition. This scholarly inquiry delineates novel insights pertaining to the endowed properties associated with Süleyman Pasha's mosque in İzmit. Villages, hamlets, and docks earmarked for the mosque have become embroiled in legal disputes over time, implicating a gamut of issues including administrative reconfigurations and the misappropriation of foundation assets. Across epochs, discernible fluctuations manifest in the nature and quantum of revenues allocated to mosque custodians emanating from the foundation. While certain novel revenue streams have been appended to the foundation assets, certain categories of income, such as tax revenues, have witnessed a waning efficacy. Regrettably, this analysis does not encompass endowments established externally, thereby affording a lucid delineation of the transformations experienced in the foundation's properties during the 19th century.
