Abstract:

Ottoman Empire lost the World War I, which entered in 1914 and withdrew from the war by the Mondros Armistice, which was signed on October 30, 1918. Occupations of the Allies started by the end of the war. Turkish people reacted mostly the Greek occupation of Izmir among entire occupations which were applied in Ottoman Empire. The occupation of Izmir both aroused struggle determination of Turkish people and triggered off the start of the armed resistance movement against occupations. In our study, we used the 14 paged dispatch, which was describing events of May, 14- 18 1919, of İzzet Bey who was Izmir governor during the Greek occupation. This dispatch took place in Prime Ministry State Archives. Events before the occupation of Izmir, incidents during the occupation, Turks which faced mistreatments, correspondences between Izzet Bey and representatives of the Allies and Istanbul government was included in the dispatch. Our objective was comparing the published information about the occupation of Izmir with information which provided in the Izzet Bey’s dispatch, showing the differences and illustrating once more the occupation of Izmir from the pen of Izzet Bey, who was the most authorized civilian authority during the occupation and give information about the attitude of Izzet Bey.
