Benlik hem sosyolojinin hem de psikolojinin ilgi alanına giren bir kavramdır. George Herbert Mead ve Charles Horton Cooley, benlik kavramının sosyolojik olarak anlaşılmasına ciddi katkılar sunmuşlardır. Benliğin doğuştan geldiğini savunanlara karşı Mead ve Cooley sosyal etkileşimin önemini vurgulayarak karşı çıkmışlardır. Bu iki düşünüre göre, kişinin yakın çevresinde bulunan anne baba, kardeşler, arkadaşlar, akrabalar, öğretmenler gibi önemli kişiler, tavır ve davranışlarıyla benliğin oluşumunda büyük bir etkiye sahiptirler. Bu durum yukarda sayılan kişilerin çocukla kurdukları ilişki biçiminin önemini göstermekte ve sorumluluklarını arttırmaktadır. Sevgi ve saygının egemen olduğu, insanların birbirine değer verdiği, çocuğun sağlıklı bir kişilik geliştirebilmesi için herkesin elbirliğiyle gayret ettiği toplumsal bir ortamda büyümek çocuk için büyük bir şanstır. Ama bu hikâye aynı zamanda insan sevgisini bütünüyle yitirmiş böylesine canavar bir insanın bile duyduğu güzel sözlerden sonra nasıl da bambaşka bir kişiliğe büründüğünün güzel bir örneğini sunmaktadır.
Self is a concept that enters the field of interest of both sociology and psychology. George Herbert Mead and Charles Horton Cooley have made a serious contribution to the sociological understanding of the concept of self. Mead and Cooley opposed those who claimed that self was born of nature by emphasizing the importance of social interaction. According to these two thoughts, important persons, such as parents, brothers, friends, relatives, teachers, who are close to the person, with their attitudes and behaviors, have a great impact on the formation of self. This situation shows the importance of the form of the relationship that the people listed above establish with the child and increases their responsibilities. It is a great luck for the child to grow up in a social environment where love and respect dominate, where people value each other, where everyone is working together to develop a healthy personality. In this article, the mirror focuses on concepts like self, self, game, group game, generalized others, me, me/me.
