Abstract:

Humankind, who has named the place where she has lived since ancient times, has considered many factors, such as periodic, cultural, and geographical elements while doing this process. In this study, the neighborhoods of Burdur, one of the important cities of Anatolia, were examined within the scope of urban toponymy. In this respect, the names of the neighborhoods that make up the city of Burdur in the 16th century, 19th century, and the Republican period were determined, and the factors that effectively gave these names were examined on a historical and spatial scale. While conducting the study, the historical and geographical literature of the city of Burdur and topographic maps with a scale of 1/25.000 were used, and information about the source of the neighborhood names was obtained by making observations and examinations of the field. Neighborhood names are categorized according to religious, ethnic, personal, hydrological, topographic, socio-cultural, socioeconomic, immigration, Republic, feelings and thoughts, and military and security-related elements. Neighborhood names in Burdur, mostly from temples in the 16th century, were shaped by personal names and socio-economic activities in the 19th century with the development of urban functions. In the Republican period, the construction and ideology of the new state left its mark on the names of the neighborhoods, and an essential part of the names of the neighborhoods changed. In addition, it has been determined that some neighborhoods in the historical core of the city have preserved their names. In this respect, starting from the neighborhood names, it is seen that the old city identity of Burdur is still preserved in the historical core of the city, and there are personal and conceptual names from the Republican period in the neighborhoods located in the newly developed areas.
