Abstract:

Iraq occupies strategic importance due to its geographical location, as it occupies the eastern part of the Fertile Crescent, which surrounds the Arabian Peninsula and neighbors two non-Arab countries, Turkey and Iran, and because it has recently become a major importer of consumer goods, due to its dependence mainly on the export of oil, and the lack of exploitation Any other resources, so the study of the economic situation of Iraq in the light of political geography is one of the important and vital topics that should be studied and dealt with in research, especially in our time because economic power is the cornerstone of all other power elements according to the method of power analysis in the geopolitical literature. Iraq suffered from colonial control for a long time, despite its liberation from colonial control and gaining political independence, but it was not liberated from economic dependence on advanced capitalist countries and international financial institutions. Thus, the economy lost its independence. This has resulted in the unequal relationship between the Iraqi economy and international financial institutions (economic dependency). To find out the extent of independence and the degree of exposure to the outside. In the field of power analysis, the study reached many conclusions that the Iraqi economy depends on one commodity, which is oil, which has lost its independence and made it a dependent economy. Therefore, the Iraqi economy is one of the economies that suffers from structural distortions and geopolitical weakness.
