Kurmaca eserlerin başında gelen ve malzemesi insan olan romanda mekân, çeşitli işlevlerde kullanılır. Bu çalışmada onun, dönüştürücü/değiştirici etkisi temel alınarak bu işlevini sadece insanda değil, insanın temel belirleyenleri üzerinde de gerçekleştirdiğini göstermek amaçlanmıştır. Mekânın, insanla olduğu kadar cinsiyet kavramıyla da sıkı bir etkileşimi vardır. İnsanın cinsiyeti ile kurduğu ilişkiyi, mekân üzerinden anlamak ve yorumlamak mümkündür. Aynı şekilde toplumsal cinsiyet normları, mekânlar vasıtasıyla biçimlenir ve düzenlenir. Bu bağlamda cinsiyetin, mekânsal sınırlılıklarla beraber şekillendiğini, kimi mekânsal sınıflandırmaların da cinsiyet rollerine göre yapıldığını söylemek yerinde olur. Mekâna anlam katan insan, orayı cinsiyeti ölçüsünde eril ya da dişil hâle getirir. Aynı şekilde “cinsiyetçi mekân” da kadınla erkeğin mekân kullanımlarını ve mekânsal davranış biçimlerini belirler. Bu durum mekânın, hem cinsiyeti hem de cinsiyet algısını dönüştürebileceğini göstermektedir. Dolayısıyla roman incelemelerinde de bu özellikler temel alınıp mekânın, cinsiyet algısı üzerinden insanı nasıl dönüştürdüğü vurgulanmaya çalışılmıştır.
In the novel, which is one of the leading fictional works and whose material is human, space is used for various functions. In this study, the aim is to demonstrate that the transformative/altering effect of space is based, not only on humans but also on the fundamental determinants of humans. The space has a tight interaction not only with humans but also with the concept of gender. It is possible to understand and interpret the relationship that individuals establish with their gender through space. Similarly, societal gender norms are shaped and organized through spaces. In this context, it would be appropriate to claim that gender, along with spatial limitations, is shaped, and certain spatial classifications are also made according to gender roles. The individual imbuing meaning into space renders it masculine or feminine in accordance with their gender. Similarly, a "gendered space" dictates the spatial usage and behavioral patterns of women and men. This situation indicates that space has the capability to transform both gender and gender perceptions. Therefore, an effort has been made to highlight how space transformed human beings through the lens of gender perceptions by taking into consideration these qualities in the analyses of the novels.
