Abstract:

This research aims to determine the sportsmanship levels of students who are interested in various martial arts and to examine them in terms of some variables. The research is quantitative and was conducted in a descriptive questionnaire model. 122 athletes, 62.3% male, and 37.7% female, among secondary school students who are interested in different combat sports in Aydın province, participated in the study. The Multidimensional Sportsmanship Orientation Scale used in the study was developed by Vallerand et al. (1997) and Sezen-Balçıkanlı (2010). Independent samples t-test and ANOVA, which are parametric tests, were used in the research statistics due to the normal distribution of the data. The frequency and percentage values of personal characteristics were also analyzed (α = 0.05). Descriptive statistics were analyzed to determine the sportsmanship levels of the athletes. According to the research findings in the comparisons made according to the gender variable, a significant difference was found in the sub-dimensions of the scale due to respect for one’s full commitment and respect for opponents (p<0.05). In the comparison made according to participation in social activities, it was found that there was a significant difference between all scales and sub-dimensions in favor of those participating in social activities (p<0.05). In the comparison made according to the years of sports activities of the students, a significant difference was found according to the sub-dimension of the scale compared to the respect for opponents (p<0.05). However, it was found that there was no significant difference between the groups in the comparisons made according to the daily exercise durations and sports purposes of the students engaged in combat sports (p> 0.05). As a result; It was determined that the sportsmanship perception of the students who were interested in martial sports was above the middle level. Considering the effect of sports on socialization, it can be said that the sportsmanship orientation of individuals who do sports developed not only in sports areas but also in other areas. In this direction, it is suggested that sports, which are known to contribute positively to the development and socialization of moral individuals, should be supported in every part of our country and every field.
