OBJECTIVE: The study was carried out to determine the contributions and opinions of nurses and midwives working with intern students in the clinics about new internship program. METHODS: The study data were collected with questionnaires made with clinic nurses in the Medical Faculty Hospital of Ondokuz Mayıs University. Study population consisted of 220 nurses working in the clinics where intern students make their practices and a total of 137 nurses who agreed to participate in the study were included in the study group. The study data were collected at the end of internship through a questionnaire form developed by the researcher. The questionnaire form contains thirty questions about the opinions of nurses about internship practice and its contributions to students and themselves. The collected data were evaluated in the SPSS 17 computer software and statistical analyses were performed. RESULTS: Of the nurses participating in the study, 38.7% were aged 26-30 years, 75.2% had a bachelor’s degree and 89.8% were clinic nurses. To the question what contributions internship make for students, 59.9% of nurses stated that it boosts clinic knowledge and skills of students, 62.8% stated that it increases the self-confidence of students and 56.2% said that it develops communication skills of students. It has been observed that internship increases the quality of nursing care (50.4%), does not restrict nurses’ time allocated to patient (82.5%), does not increase work load (74.5%) and increase the job satisfaction of nurses (59.1%). Of the nurses, 64.2% stated that internship should be continued, 43.1% said that intern students should also work on shift basis, and 70.1% said that intern students should be provided with convenient physical conditions. Furthermore, nurses expressed that intern students could not acquire the knowledge only by watching the nurses in clinic environment (49.6%) and clinic nurses should provide guidance to students in applications (94.9%). Nurses with bachelor’s degree were determined to believe that internship increases knowledge and skills and promotes the self-confidence and communication skills of students and this was found statistically significant (p<0.05) CONCLUSION: It is determined that nurses find internship useful for professional development.
