Abstract:

The latest product of Anton Chekhov's legendary art life, "The Cherry Orchard", has a different place in the artist's individual perspective and artistic life than many of his works. The writing process, which coincides with the last stages of his illness, deeply affects the artist both spiritually and physically. His mastery of writing short does not effect in this work. The artist has to study on his work for a long time. He spends the remainder of the severe attacks of his illness by closing in his room and working. Despite all these difficult processes, Chekhov persistently focused on writing a comedy. He writes his people, their ordinary conversations, their view of the world, and even their clothes in an ordinary way. When the funny skeleton he wanted to create is combined with the changing political order and mentality of the period, unfortunately, the work that the artist wrote as a comedy turns into a drama. Although the artist does not accept it, the most important reason for this situation is that the subject that forms the basis of the work is dramatic. Although Chekhov tried to soften the subject with his dialogues, very few people saw this situation like him. After the artist, the play's directors K. S. Stanislavski and V. İ. Nemirovich-Dançenko only turns to this drama in the work and encourages his actors to act in this direction will turn the theater play from a comedy to a drama even while the posters are being printed. Unable to attend rehearsals due to health problems, Chekhov, no matter how hard he tries, fails to prove to the directors, the literary critics, or the audience that his work is comedy. This study is based on explaining Chekhov's thoughts and struggle on whether the "Cherry Orchard", one of the masterpieces of the artist, is a comedy or a drama.
