Abstract:

Austrian movie director Michael Haneke who was born in Berlin 1942, is one of the exceptional directors who do not see cinema as a mere means of entertainment and revealing the artistic expression that exists at it’s core. Haneke's directorial film career began with television and then went on to the cinema. The movie filmography of Haneke consists of twelve films so far. The most distinctive feature of Haneke's cinema is that the director shares his views on the corruption of post-modernism society with his visual style through indicators and metaphors with his audience. The main themes in the director's films, which have an uncomfortable and harsh style are lack of communication, racism, violence, normalization of violence, media manipulation, and the effects of the media on society. In this study, the indicators and metaphors that constitute the narrative language of the Haneke cinema were solved by the method of discourse analysis and tried to create a different perspective on the cinema of the director. As examples, the films "The Seventh Continent", "Benny's Video" and "Funny Games" were selected. The main themes in these films are individualism and bourgeois criticism based on the normalization of violence in the means of communication. Trying to make sense of metaphors with a definite language simply means depriving them of the imagination they owe to their existence. The solutions and the conclusions reached in this research are a combination of the author’s own imagination and the repertoire. As a result, the process of making sense of art is different for everyone. This work covers these aspects in the sense of respect for Michael Haneke.
