Türk devletlerinde kadın toplumda önemli bir yere sahip olup, insanlığın devamının menbaı olduğu için de kıymetli görülmüştür. İlk Türk devletlerinde kadın devletin yönetiminde söz sahibi iken zamanla daha arka planda kalmıştır. Kadının toplumda arka planda kalması ile birlikte eğitimi meselesi de çok üzerinde düşünülmeyen bir konu olmuştur. Osmanlı Devleti’nde gündeme gelen yenileşme hareketleri ile birlikte kadının eğitimi de konuşulan konular arasına girmiş ve kadının eğitiminin toplumun eğitimi olduğu fark edilmiştir. Böylece 19. yüzyılda kadınların da eğitim alabilecekleri bir eğitim kurumu ihtiyacı hasıl olmuştur. Yüzyılın sonuna doğru kadınların eğitim görebilecekleri okullardaki artışa binaen kadın öğretmen yetiştirilmesi meselesi gündeme gelmiş ve Darülmuallimat kurulmuştur. 20. yüzyılın başında kadınların yükseköğrenim görmeleri meselesi de gündeme gelmiştir. Millî Mücadele sürecinde Türk kadınının Türk askeri ile birlikte ölüm kalım savaşında yer almış olması ise kadının toplumsal olarak daha ön plana çıkmasına vesile olmuştur. Cumhuriyetin ilanıyla birlikte kadınlar eski Türk devletlerinde olduğu gibi hak ettiği değeri görmeye başlamış ve toplumun yarısı olduğu kabul görmüştür. Daha 1930’lu yıllarda kadınlara verilen seçme seçilme hakkı da bunun göstergesidir. Kadınlar toplumda öncelikle anne ve eş olarak görülmüş ve bu yönde eğitim almaları gerektiği üzerinde düşünceler gelişmişse de zamanla kadının birey olduğu ve bir işe sahip olması gerekliliği de görülmeye başlanmıştır. Günümüz Türkiye’sinde kadın erkekle hukuki olarak eşit haklara sahip olmakla birlikte geleneksel aile yapısından kaynaklı olarak hala birey olmayı başaramamıştır.

The right to be elected given to women in the 1930s is also an indicator of this. Women in society were first seen as mothers and spouses and the thoughts on the need to be educated in this direction have evolved, but with time the need for the woman to be individual and to have a job has also begun to be seen. In today’s Turkey, women and men have equal rights in law, but are still unable to be individuals due to the traditional family structure.
