Licorice root (Radix Liquiritiae) and liquorish (Succus Liquiritiae) are known to be used in Mesopotamia, Sumerian period, China, India, Egypt, Greece and also in Roman medicine for centuries and they are one of the oldest plants that are used in treatment. In traditional treatments, licorice root and liquorish are mostly used for sore throat, cough and cold. In Turkey, they are named with different names like “biyam, boyam, piyam and tatlı kök (sweet root) and are known as purgatives, diuretics and antitussives. They are also known to be used in the treatment of stomach problems and licorice’s sorbet is also known to be famous. The efficiency of the licorice root in the treatment of hepatitis and cancer has been proven in the recent researches. Today, licorice root is used in many medicines and it is registered in many medicinal plant books. It has been an important plant since ancient age. In our research, we found out that the owners of the Levantine Forbes Company (Mac Andrews and Forbes Co. Ltd.) in Izmir used to pick licorice root around Aydın, Nazilli and Söke and they used to obtain liqurish from the licorice root in their own factories that they established and exported them to United Kingdom, European Countries and USA between the years of 1854 and 1960. “Forbes Mansion”, which belongs to Forbes Family in Buca (a district in Izmir) is kind of a document that shows an important fortune earned from licorice trade. Licorice root was one of the most important export items of Izmir port in 1889 and the records that show that fact prove the importance of licorice trade in Izmir. In this research, importance of licorice root in the socioeconomic life of Izmir in the 19th century is searched and discussed
