Abstract This article is the first of a series of monographic studies that will allow, as a whole, a balanced and comprehensive vision of the Yumurino settlement.1 In this work we intend to analyze and reflect, based on the information censuses and other complementary historical, geographical and statistical data, the relations between the sugar economy, the population and the settlement in the province of Matanzas, the sugar heart of Cuba in the 19th century. This objective becomes complicated due to the numerous transformations that, in all orders, affected this area of Western Cuba. For your better understanding, we have divided the study into several stages that correspond to the economic, political and social events that have occurred in the province and in the country, also taking into account the census periods.
