Abstract:

In a constantly developing and changing world, technological developments, increasing care needs due to chronic diseases, and the increase in the human population increase the demand for hospitals. These intense demands cause some or all of the care that patients need to be neglected or postponed. This situation called “Missed Nursing Care” has become an important problem that affects both the patient and the nurse adversely. The individual characteristics of nurses, institutional structure, working conditions, and communication within the team affect the implementation of care practices. Since it is not possible to fully evaluate all aspects of nursing care by patients, both nurses’ opinions and negative patient outcomes were examined in order to evaluate patients’ views on missed care practices. As a result of researches, it was identified that missed nursing care caused adverse outcomes such as nosocomial infections, falls, medication errors, and pressure ulcers, which affect the quality of life and safety of the patient. At the same time, it is reported that nurses have decreased job satisfaction and experienced emotional trauma such as regret, guilt, and disappointment due to this situation. In this context, missed nursing care should be considered as neglect or omission that threatens the quality of care and patient/nurse health. In this article, the concept/practices of missed nursing care, the reasons for missed nursing care, and its effects on patients and nurses were discussed.
