Introduction: The relationship between irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and stress, depression and anxiety; negative effects on quality of life have been shown in studies so far. In this study, we aimed to investigate cognitive personality disorders through schema model. Methods: Our study was planed as a case-control study in patients with IBS who were admitted to the internal medicine outpatient clinic of our hospital. All participants completed the Young Schema Questionnaire-Short Form (YSQ-SF3), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). Results: Case-control study including patients with IBS and 50 healthy individuals without any chronic disease. According to the Young schema model, IBS patients had higher pessimism, dependence / nesting and insecurity / social isolation schemas than control group. . In addition, IBS patients were more depressive than the control group (12% to 2%; p <0.001); more anxious (84% to 28%; p <0.001). In the control group, all sub-dimensions of the schema had a slight, moderate and strong correlation with each other; In IBS patients there was no correlation between punishment and emotional deprivation, failure and high standards; and there was no correlation between high standards and insecurity, imperfection and vulnerability to threats. Discussion:. With this study, cognitive awareness was increased in IBS patients and it is thought that psychotherapies to be carried out through cognitive personality schema orientations will increase the way individuals perceive life and therefore their quality of life. At this point, it is envisaged that the somatic symptoms of satisfied individuals will be reduced, and thus it will be easier for them to adapt to their diseases.
