Sosyal Tarihsel süreç bakımından, iki asrı aşkın süredir zihinleri meşgul eden bir mevzu olan medeniyet, bir terim olarak on dokuzuncu asır itibarıyla Türk düşünce hayatında yer edinir. Osmanlı Devleti’nin yönünü Batı’ya çevirdiği yıllarda gündeme gelmesi nedeniyle medeniyet, genellikle toplum tarafından Batılılaşma veya modernleşme faaliyetleriyle özdeşleştirilir. Dolayısıyla medeniyet, bir diğer sosyal mefhum olan kültür ile karıştırılmaya başlanır. Bu doğrultuda, medeniyet tabiri telaffuz edildiğinde, Türk toplumunun zihninde sadece Batı medeniyeti canlanır hâle gelir. Hatta toplum, medeniyetin millî kültürden kopmayı ifade ettiğine kanaat getirdiğinden, medeniyeti eleştirme yoluna gider. Yeni Türk Edebiyatı sahasında öncü çalışmalar meydana getirerek, yol gösterici bir misyon üstlenen Prof. Dr. Orhan Okay da gerek akademik hayatı, gerekse sosyal hayatı esnasında medeniyet mevzuuna duyarsız kalmaz. Medeniyet ve kültürün birbiriyle karıştırılan mefhumlar olduğunun altını çizerek, mevzubahis unsurlar arasındaki farkı belirginleştirmeye çalışır. Medeniyet kavramının sınırlarını çizmek üzere, kültürün manevi unsurları bünyesinde toplamasına karşılık, medeniyetin maddi boyuttaki yaşama vasıtalarını ifade ettiğini ileri sürer. Bu makalede, Orhan Okay’ın medeniyet teriminin gündeme gelişine dair tespit ve görüşleri değerlendirilmek suretiyle, medeniyete bakış açısı belirginleştirilmeye çalışılmaktadır. Toplumun medeniyete yüklediği manalar Orhan Okay’ın gözünden yansıtılıp, Türk medeniyetinin bir nehir misali Doğu’dan Batı’ya doğru akışının kaynağı ve mansabı dikkatlere sunulmaktadır.
From the point of view of the social historical process, civilization, which has been a position occupying the minds for more than two centuries, as a term, takes place in the Turkish thought life from the nineteenth century. As the Ottoman State came to the agenda in the years in which it turned the direction to the West, civilization is often identified by society with Westernization or modernization activities. Therefore, civilization begins to be confused with another social culture. In this direction, when the character of civilization is expressed, only the Western civilization can be revived in the minds of the Turkish society. Even as the society makes it clear that civilization is separated from the national culture, civilization goes to the way of criticism. Prof. Dr. Orhan Okay, who is taking on a guiding mission by producing advanced studies in the field of New Turkish Literature, is not sensitive to the status of civilization during his academic life or social life. By pointing out that civilization and culture are mixed mixture, it tries to clarify the difference between the existing elements. In order to draw the limits of the concept of civilization, he claims that, in response to the collection of the spiritual elements of culture, civilization expresses the means of living in the material dimension. In this article, by assessing the identification and views of Orhan Okay’s term of civilization on the agenda, the viewpoint of civilization is trying to be highlighted. The minds that society has charged to civilization are reflected in the eyes of Orhan Okay, and the source and the minds of the flow from the east to the west, a river of the Turkish civilization, are presented to the attention.
