Abstract:

Online learning environments and tools that have been used for compulsory reasons have become a significant learning opportunity for education. However, the intensive digital stimuli distract students and make it harder to for them to focus on the lesson. Therefore, motivating a student is an essential element that increases the effectiveness of the learning and teaching process. The research covers ways to motivate students during the online learning process. The study was conducted using the case study, one of the qualitative research methods, and the convenience sampling technique, which is one of the purposeful sampling types. In the spring 2019-20 academic year, the research consisted of the senior class, volunteer and eight pre-service teachers. The research data were collected online with a semi-structured interview form. Therefore, the research is limited to the sample group, measurement tools and techniques. According to the research results, pre-service teachers see study time as the main motivating factor in online education. In addition, they feel that academic communication has increased the motivation period, and they believe that digital education practices have significant contributions to motivating them. In this sense, it is suggested that the duration of online courses should be kept shorter, the communication of teachers and students should be actively engaged in the course, and the literacy of digital teaching tools and modules appropriate to the course content should be ensured.
