Abstract:

When the works of art are examined in the historical process, it has been the pioneer, the follower and the reflector of the society. In other words, social events direct the artists. In this research, the murder of French revolutionist Jean Paul Marat, which has become a social phenomenon, is looked at from different angles, the historical events of the period were examined and the lives and political views of the heroes of the event, Marat and Corday, were shed light on. Within the scope of the research, works describing the Marat murder belonging to different periods and artists were examined and a selection of works of art produced until today has been determined. 11 works of art were included in this selection and in this direction, the perspectives and styles of artists were examined. As a result of the research, it is seen that there are differences in the attitudes of the artists in the way they handle Marat and his murderer Corday. At the same time, in the works examined regardless of the period, it is seen that the bathtub scene in Marat’s death is perceived as an aesthetic interpretation by moving away from its context.
