Abstract:

Newborn babies face a lot of painful attempts as soon as they open their eyes to life. In babies who begin to live in the newborn intensive care unit, the condition of confrontation with painful processes is inevitable. If the pain is not treated effectively during this period, behavioral and neurological problems may occur in babies. Therefore, it is necessary and important that all members of the health team involved in the assessment of the pain and care of newborns have knowledge, skills and experience in pain management. Although the pain is not able to respond verbally, newborns express the pain they experience by showing physiological, behavioral, hormonal and metabolic changes. The degree of pain can be assessed by pain scanning methods based on the observation and interpretation of these changes. The evaluation of the pain response using the appropriate pain scale guides the treatment. There are two forms of pain treatment in newborn babies: pharmacological and non-pharmacological. These methods can be used together or alone. But the most important point in treatment is the reduction and elimination of painful warnings as much as possible. The objective of this article is to raise awareness of the presence of pain sensation and the needs of treatment in the members of the health team involved in the care of newborns, to explain the methods to be used for effective pain treatment in accordance with current literature.
