1980’lerin sonundan itibaren, büyük ölçüde sınır ötesi üretime dayanan ve küresel değer zincirleri olarak adlandırılan yeni bir uluslararası üretim organizasyonu modelinin ortaya çıkması uluslararası ticaretin de şeklini değiştirmiş, ülkeler arasında daha fazla rekabet ve karşılıklı bağımlılık yaratmıştır. Ülkeler, işleri ve yatırımları çekmek için rekabet etmelerine rağmen, birbirlerinin talebine, sermayesine ve üretimine gittikçe daha fazla bağımlı hale gelmiş durumdadır. Artık ülkelerin karşılaştırmalı üstünlüklerinin sektörlerden öte üretim aşamalarına göre yeniden şekillendiği ve mal ticaretine dayalı bir yapıdan görev ticaretine dayalı bir yapıya doğru dönüştüğü bu yeni paradigma değişimi, hem gelişmiş hem de gelişmekte olan ülkelerdeki üretim yapısının ve dış ticaret kompozisyonunun dönüşmesini de beraberinde getirmektedir. Dünya üretimindeki ve dış ticaret yapısındaki söz konusu yapısal dönüşüm, Türkiye ekonomisinin bu gelişmeye nasıl uyum sağladığının değerlendirilmesini zorunlu kılmaktadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, küresel değer zincirlerine katılımın Türkiye ekonomisinin üretim ve dış ticaret yapısını nasıl etkilediğini ortaya koymaktır. Bu analiz için OECD-WTO TIVA Trade in Value Added veri tabanındaki göstergelerden yararlanılmıştır.
