Evrensel bir niteliğe sahip olan ağaç kültü, geçmişten günümüze tüm din ve mitolojilerin önemli konularından birini teşkil etmektedir. Özellikle kozmik ağaç motifi hemen bütün dinlerde saygı görmüş doğum, ölüm ve yeniden dirilmenin bir sembolü olarak görülmüştür. Ağaçlar, bazen dalları altında oturan ve onu mesken tutanların aydınlanmasını sağlarken bazen de ona zarar verenleri çeşitli yöntemlerle cezalandıran bir nesne olmuştur. Onun estetik değeri, meyvesi, baharda açan çiçekleri gibi özellikleri profan anlayışta olan insanları dahi hayran bırakmaktadır. Yahudilik ve Hristiyanlıkta olmasa da İslam’da ağaç, diğer canlılar gibi Tanrı’nın adını zikreden olarak görülmüş özellikle Hadis metinlerinde bunun örneklerine sıklıkla yer verilmiştir. Türklerde ağaç kültü ise Yer-su inanışları ile doğrudan alakalı görülmektedir. Orhun abideleri ve diğer kitabelerde de geçtiği üzere Türkler, ıduk yersublara inanmakta ve onları birer bağımsız ruh olarak düşünmektedirler. Konu edilen yer-su ruhları iye ve idi (sahip) anlamına gelen kelimelerle de anılmaktadır. Bu çerçevede hemen her yerin bir iyesi ve sahibinin olduğu kabul edilmekte ve yer-su kültünü ilgilendiren hususlarda bir iş yapılmadan önce o yerin sahibi veya iyesinden izin alınması gerektiğine inanılmaktadır. Bu izin bir kanlı kurban kesmek ya da ağaç dallarına bir çaput bağlamakla sağlanabilmektedir. Bu çerçeveden bakıldığında, Anadolu coğrafyasında bir kısım ağaçların secde ettiği mitinin İslam yanında Türklerin İslam öncesi yer-su inanışlarıyla doğrudan alakaları bulunmaktadır.
The tree culture, which has a universal character, is one of the important topics of all religions and mythologies from the past to the present day. In particular, the cosmic tree motivation has been seen as a symbol of birth, death and resurrection, respected in almost all religions. The trees have sometimes been an object that sits under their branches and gives the lighting of those who hold it home, while sometimes punishes those who hurt it in various ways. Its aesthetic value, its fruit, its flowers in the spring, and its characteristics are admired even by people who are in profan understanding. Although not in Judaism and Christianity, in Islam, the tree, like other living beings, was seen as a reminder of the name of God, especially in the Hades texts, the examples of it were frequently placed. In Turkey, the tree culture is directly related to the Earth-Water beliefs. As in the Orhun abidles and other books, the Turks believe in the dead and think of them as an independent spirit. The words of the earth and the waters are the words of the earth and the words of the earth are the words of the earth and the words of the earth are the words of the earth. In this context, it is believed that almost every place has a good and ownership, and it is believed that it should be permitted from the owner or good of that place before a business is done in matters relating to the earth-water cult. This permission can be granted by cutting a blood victim or by bounding a crossing to the branches of the tree. From this framework, the myth that some trees worship in the Anatolian geography, along with Islam, is directly related to the beliefs of the Turkish pre-Islam land-water.
