Bu çalışmada, Türk kültüründeki düğün törenlerinde görülen gelin ağlatma ritüelinin simgesel anlamının, geleneksel Çuvaş kültüründeki benzer biçimi üzerinden açıklanması amaçlanmıştır. Araştırmacıların gelin ağlatması uygulamasını kına gecesi törenlerinin sadece bir parçası olarak değerlendirdiği, bu uygulamayı ikinci plana ittiği, ritüel bir eylem olarak değerlendirmediği ve işlevlerini sorgulayıp anlamı üzerinde hiç durmadığı görülmektedir. Bu durumda geleneksel Çuvaş düğünlerinde kına yakma geleneği olmadığı hâlde gelin ağlatma uygulamasının neden çok önemli olduğu gibi sorular açıklanamamaktadır. Çalışmada öncelikle ritüel ve ritüel ağlamanın çerçevesi çizilerek gelin ağlatma uygulamasının mahiyeti belirlenmiştir. Daha sonra gelin ağlatma ritüeliyle ilgili araştırmalar değerlendirilerek bazı sorular sorulmuş ve ardından Çuvaşlarda görülen benzer uygulama incelenerek bu sorulara cevap aranmıştır. Bu tartışmalara dayalı olarak gelin ağlatma uygulamasının tam bir ritüel ağlama olduğu, duygusal yoğunluktan tamamen bağımsız olmamakla birlikte toplumsal bir dayatmanın sonucu olarak simgesel bir ölüm ve yeniden doğuş simgeciliği altında toplumsal bir kimlik dönüşümüne işaret ettiği gibi sonuçlara ulaşılmıştır.
In this study, it is aimed to explain the symbolic meaning of the bride’s weeping ritual in wedding ceremonies in Turkic culture, through its similar form in traditional Chuvash culture. It is seen that the researchers consider the bride’s weeping only as a part of the henna night ceremonies, push this practice into the background, do not see it as a ritual practice and question its functions, but never seek for its meaning. Thus, questions such as why the custom of making the bride cry is very important, although there is no tradition of applying henna in the traditional Chuvash wedding rituals, cannot be explained. In the study, first of all, the nature of the bride crying practice was determined by drawing the framework of ritual and ritual crying. Afterwards, researches on the bride crying ritual are evaluated and some questions are asked, and then the similar form which is observed in Chuvash is examined and answers are sought for these questions. Based on these discussions, it has been concluded that the practice of crying the bride is a complete ritual cry, and although not completely independent of emotional intensity, it points to a social identity transformation under a symbolic death and rebirth symbolism as a result of a social imposition.
