Abstract:

Amasra, a district of Bartın, is a port town that has existed since ancient times, dating back to the Roman, Byzantine, Genoese, and Ottoman periods. Due to the richness of its natural cover, it served as a shipbuilding center for many years, enriching various civilizations. Additionally, it gained renown for the production of ornamental carved items unique to the region, primarily crafted from boxwood and walnut trees. Professor Dr. Semavi Eyice, a distinguished scholar raised in the historically significant city of Amasra, is the fifth-generation representative of the longstanding Eyiceler family, which dates back 250 years. He has become Turkey's first Byzantine art historian, and concurrently, he is the first scholar to introduce the historical artifacts of Amasra through Turkish publications. During the summer holidays between the years 1930 and 1940, Professor Dr. Semavi Eyice spent his childhood and youth in Amasra, thus having the opportunity to intimately familiarize himself with the region and its history. This research and analysis article aims to unveil, for the first time, the historical journey of the Eyices family that commenced with Eyice Uncle in Amasra. Drawing from the writings and personal narratives of Semavi Eyice about Amasra, an effort is made to provide a bibliography on the values of Amasra and its historical artifacts.
