Makale, 16. yüzyılda Batı edebiyatında Montaigne’nin Essais isimli eseriyle ortaya çıkıp 19. yüzyıldan itibaren Arap edebiyatında görülmeye başlayan edebî türlerden biridir. Modern Arap edebiyatının önemli türlerinden biri haline gelen makale, birçok Arap edebiyatçısının ilgisini çekerek iki temel çizgide gelişim göstermiştir. Bunlardan birincisi, Montaigne tarzının takipçisi olarak ortaya çıkan “el-makâletu’z-zâtiyye”; diğeri de F. Bacon tarzının takipçisi olarak ortaya çıkan “el-makâletu’l-mevdû‘iyye”dir. Türk edebiyatında ise makaleyi, ayrı birer tür olarak “deneme” ve “makale” adlı yazın türleri karşılamaktadır. Arap edebiyatındaki makalenin bu iki türü, içerdiği konular ve takip edilen yöntemler açısından birçok çeşide ayrılmıştır.
