Abstract:

Namık Kemal is one of the important artists of Turkish literature after the Tanzimat, who has become famous as the "poet of homeland and freedom" in Turkish literature. Namık Kemal, who starts poetry by imitating classical Turkish poetry and the poets of the Encümen-I Şuara, later forms his own style over time. The artist, who joins the Encümen-i Şuara community, continues to sing old-style poems with the poets in the community. Working in the Chamber of Translation, dealing with journalism, learning French and reading Western works, living in Europe and knowing this culture closely, the situation in the country causes social themes to be included in his poems. During this period, he continues to sing old-style poems as well as social themes. The poet’s understanding of poetry can be examined in two periods. In the first period, religion and mysticism are at the forefront, individual themes are used and old poetry is taken as an example as theme, form and language. In the second period, due to the situation determined by the conditions of the homeland social themes are treated alongside individual themes. In this period, the artist tries to destroy the old to accommodate the new. In this study, it is aimed to open a door to the closer recognition of the poet's poems by analyzing the sections of “Religion and Sufism, Social Life, Human, Nature, Social Themes, Old-New Issue and Style” in Namık Kemal's Poems.
