In his twenty-six years of life, Wolfgang Borchert, who has a limited number of works but has an impact on the literary world and social life, is one of the most important representatives of the literary stream known as the Destruction or Destruction Literature (Trümmerliterature), which appeared in Germany after World War II. Borchert, who lives the destruction of the war as a soldier in the army of the National Socialists, but he does not desire, in his works notes the meaninglessness of this violence and destruction, the irreversibility, and especially the collapse within the people. In our study, Borchert’s Stories, The Kitchen Hour (Die Küchenuhr) and Bread (Das Brot), commented on the female characters, who embraced the devastating years of war, through a common perception of time and space through the symbols and images that the author has shown. The same understanding and methods of male characters are interpreted by analyzing. The aim of this study is to study the behavior of the victim German woman and the selfish German man observed in Borchert's stories, taking into account the writer's life, psychology and subjective culture, the social facts of the time. The followed method is not a single study or criticism method, but a comprehensive analysis in which many literary study methods are used together. In both stories, Borchert uses the clocks showing two and a half hours after midnight as a motif for the space and the kitchen as a motif for the time. In both stories, along with the motives of the place and time, as well as many more common motives, the female characters, although under difficult conditions, behave sacrifically for men in their lives, the male characters show selfish and unvalid attitudes. In our study, this fiction of sacrifice and precious ignorance is interpreted by a comparative method of analysis and interpretation of how it is pleased by society, period and author. As a result, the most important discovery observed in the stories was that the writer was processed through the female characters, with the influence of his own lifetime and life perspective, with the patience needed for society's resilience and the faith and power he needed for rebuilding in the years of war.

As a first-hand witness Borchert, draws attention in his works to the futility and irreversibility of war’s devastation, and especially to the violence and mental breakdown it causes in mankind. This study observes and comments on the male and women characters that faced the devastation of war in Borchert’s “The Kitchen” and “The Bread” through the perception of symbols and images of common time and common space introduced by the author. By taking the social realities of the time into account, this study aims at examining the behaviours of self-sacrificing German womenfolk and selfish German menfolk commensurate with the author’s timeline, psychology, and his subjective culture. In conclusion, examining the effect of an author’s life experience and outlook, the most outstanding finding in the stories that can be perceived is the patience required for the durability of a society during the war years, as faith, strength, and resilience emerge and evolve as lived facts exposed through a narrative focusing on female characters.
