Abstract:

The Volga-Kama Region, which is located within the territory of Tatarstan today, has hosted different cultures since ancient times and has been the scene of various settlement types. Because the region, which has large water reserves and vegetation, has formed one of the migration routes preferred by different human communities, and constituted one of the most important areas where cultural contacts between the west and the east are experienced. Volga Bulgars, who took an active role in the middle times of the Volga-Kama and managed to allocate a strong state between the 10th and 13th centuries, also benefited from this versatile structure of the region. Bulgarian settlements, which started to take place in the written sources of the period, especially after the 10th century, had a multicultural origin rather than a single tradition. The traces of this diversity can be detected by archaeological research in Bulgarian settlements shaped on the old Volga-Kama, nomadic and Khazar (Saltovo-Mayaki) settlement styles.
