The effect of ischemia reperfusion on kidneys, tissue malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration, Gluthatıon Peroxidase (GSH-Px) and Superoxide Dismutase (SOO) activities were measured in 20 rats subject to occlusıon of the lef! re anal artery for 60 min followed by 24 hours reperfusıon. The animals were separated in two equal groups: Group 1 (control) and Group il (TMZ). A right nephrectomy was performed at the beginning of the ischemic period for control on each groups. After 24 h, tissue samples were taken for histopathological and biochemically examination. After 24 h of reperfusion, the MDA levels significantly increased (Group 1: p<0.001 and Group il: p<0.01, respecti vely), but the MDA levels in the Group I were found to be significantly elevated when compared with the Group il (P<0.01). GSH-Px and SOD activity significantly decreased in the Group 1 (p<0.05). SOD and GSH-P•x activity chan ges of the Group il were not meaningfull. The TMZ group had a acut tubuler necrosis grade of 1.5 which was signi ficantly lower than in group 1 (p<0.01). It is suggested that TMZ is a useful protective agent of renal damage from oxygen free radicals.
