Background: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is one of the most common progressive chronic respiratory diseases worldwide. It is important for nurses to plan the nursing interventions by determining the care needs and care dependency of during care of the patients with COPD. Aim: This is a descriptive research that has been made with the objective of determining the care dependency of individuals with COPD. Method: The sample of the research was consisted of 110 3rd and 4th phase COPD patients who were treated at Pulmonary Diseases Clinic of a university hospital. A “Patient Identifying Form” which includes socio-demographical features of patients, a “Care Dependency Scale” was used to gather the data that was required for research. Data were collected face to face with patients. Results: The patients who were attended to the research had an age average of 61.55 ± 9.15 and 87.3% of them were male; 55.5% of them are at the third phase, 44.5% of them were at the fourth phase of the COPD. Total average score of Care Dependency Scale was 48.80 ± 9.48. Care Dependency Scale of the patients has been determined as strictly dependent in domains of mobility, day/night pattern, body hygiene, daily activities, recreactional activities; and partly dependent in domains of eating/drinking, body posture, getting (un)dressing, body temperature, avoidance of danger, communication, praying, sense of rules and learning ability. There was significant difference between the Care Dependency Scale average score and age (p = .002), gender (p = .002), education (p = .002), occupation (p = .001), phase (p = .001), and additional chronic diseases of COPD(p = .001). Conclusion: It concluded that patients had taken average scores in Care Dependency Scale and that patients have partly dependent to meet of the care needs. It is recommended to plan nursing care according to their dependency levels of patients in their care needs.
