Özet:

Abstract This study aims to investigate and analyze the development of music education in Turkey since the early Republican period up until today. To that end, this study included the effects of political and cultural structure of the early Republican period on music education, national education council decisions about music education, and the nature and structure of music education in primary school curricula and music teacher education institutions. The study used document analysis as a qualitative research method. These materials were resources such as books, journals, articles, and other documents such as national education council decisions and education curricula. As far as music policies in the early Republican period are concerned, it was found that Atatürk’s opinions and suggestions concerning music education were highly influential and that institutions reflecting the general understanding of the era were established as part of innovations in music education. It was also found that some national education council decisions were made about music education. The first music teacher education institution, “Musiki Muallim Mektebi” (Music Teacher Training School), was founded in 1938 and was conjoined with the Faculty of Education in 1997 and has been training music teachers since then
