It is often known that literature, especially poetry, has a relationship with philosophy from ancient times. This relationship makes it possible to observe how paradigm changes occurring in philosophy transform the poet's personality and the contents of the poem. The increasing scientific and mental developments with the Renaissance and continuing with the Illumination have led to paradigm changes in many individual and social areas in the West. With this process of illumination, the religious-centric social structure has brought the mind-centric process. It seems that the developments in the West have also begun to transform the traditional lifestyle and thinking in the Ottoman society. With the announcement of Tanzimat and the acceleration of this process, significant differences occur in the positioning of the individual’s relationship with the existence, with the society and with himself. The effects of the change in the Ottoman literature field showed itself first in the poem, which has been the most important means of expression for centuries. In this context, one of the differences that attract attention in the Turkish poetry of the Tanzimat Period is the reflection of the deist thought in the poetry. This study aims to identify the theist effects of Tanzimat poetry in the context of the paradigm changes that Western philosophy has produced in the Ottoman world of thought.
The relationship between literature, especially poetry, and philosophy dates back to archaic times. It is a key to observe how the paradigm shifts in philosophy can transform the poet's persona and the content of the poems. Scientific and philosophical developments in the West induced individual and social paradigms to reshape. This transformation, with the declaration of Tanzimat, has changed the way of individuals' positioning themselves with society and existence. Impacts of the change first observed in the poetry which had been the main communication tool of the Ottoman literature for centuries. In this context, one of the salient transformation in poems during the Tanzimat Reform Era was the reflection of deist ideas on the content of the writings. This study aims to establish the impact of deist ideology on poems of Ottoman society during the Tanzimat period which were influenced by the paradigm shifts in the Western philosophical developments.
