Abstract:

After the spread of Islam in Anatolian lands, it became possible to become permanent in this geography by educating the people to which it belonged. After the conquest of Giresun by Bayramoğlu Süleyman Bey in 1397, the permanent status of Islam was possible with the functionality of different educational institutions and religious structures. In this context, one of the intellectuals who left a mark in the education and religious/mystical life of Giresun county is Müftüzâde Mehmed Talip Efendi. Mehmed Talip Efendi, one of the last Ottoman scholars who lived in Giresun between 1800-1882, first served the people of Giresun as a preacher and counselor in the central mosque. His life adventure, which started as a professor in Giresun central district, continued as Mufti of District of Giresun Office. He continued to give lectures in the Köseoğlu and Mustafa Efendi madrasas in the city, while he was the mufti of the district, and he also acted as the Sheikh of chair of the Sultan Selim Mosque, the central place of worship of the city. Due to his special interest in calligraphy during his madrasa education, he both produced works and trained many students on this subject. In addition to his official bureaucratic duties, Mehmed Talip Efendi was appointed as a sheikh in dervish lodge in the Nakşi/Halidî Lodge in the city, with the approval he received from Ahmed Ziyaeddin Gümüşhanevi as one of the ilmiye class. Despite his proficiency in the field of science, he was able to combine a rare scientist with his mystical personality.
