This study aims to reveal how melodramatic imagination is transformed in Turkish cinema and which social fantasies it addresses in the context of its relationship with modernism. Melodrama has been the basic discourse form of Turkish cinema, especially during the 1960s and 1970s, and has continued to be the form of imagination that penetrates a number of genres related to the Turkish modernization process. In the first part of the study, the genre approach to melodrama is examined. Melodrama is treated as a system of interpretation to expose the connection between modernism and trauma theory. The second part of the study considers Turkish cinema and melodramatic tradition in the context of modernist concepts and traumatic events. In light of these considerations, the study undertakes an in-depth analysis of three films (Babam ve Oğlum, Gönül Yarası and Güneşi Gördüm) that were made in the 2000s.
