Abstract:

As an academical discipline and a field of arts Orientalism is an ideology which is tried to be justified. Even though the discourse tries to supply Orientalism be innocent, the reality displays the contrary. We face a system of thought which is innocent in neither social sciences, nor literature and arts as innocent as it is claimed. The mission that the Orientalists carry out has been quite functional in Colonialism. The West looked for his own wishes in the East, attributing those characteristics, which it did not see suitable to its high ethics, to the East. Then it stepped out a legendary trip with this imagination. Hence, the East is sometimes the Alaaddin’s lamp and genie in the lamp and it is also a magical world founded instantly by the genie. However, this world has generally seen as mostly unethical, heretical and not having any virtue. It has therefore been founded an imaginary East which was characterized by such images as harem, hammam, eroticism, egzotism, despotism, laziness, ugliness and mess. All of these has resulted a certain fact that the East should be improved. The West which is full of virtue and responsibility has therefore put on the sword and gone out endless campaigns in order to chasten the East. This article deals with how the Orientalists and the ideology behind it serve Colonialism in this long period adventure.
