Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of using children's periodicals as a material in Turkish lessons on basic language skills. The research was carried out in the action research model. The research was implemented in a Turkish course in a period of five weeks. The research was implemented in İldem İMKB Secondary School in Melikgazi district of Kayseri province. In the research process, texts selected from children's magazines and children's magazines belonging to these texts were used instead of Turkish textbooks. An activity book has been prepared in accordance with these texts and the contents of the issue to which the text belongs. The research data were obtained from the student reflective diary, the researcher's diary kept to follow the process and reflect the observations, the committee meeting, the parent meeting and the videos recorded in the lessons. Video recording and other data were transcribed and analyzed by content analysis method. In addition, video recordings were analyzed by content analysis method. The video recordings of the lessons were coded based on the students' participation time in the activities of reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. In the coding, a 3-point rating code was used according to the students' participation in the course and activities. The study's findings revealed that the Turkish course, which used children's magazines as a teaching material, had a positive effects on listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills. According to the findings of video coding for students' participation in basic language skills activities, the codes with the longest duration in listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills were at the level of 3 (very good).
