Purpose: The study was performed in an identifiable manner in order to identify the information requirements and practices for the prevention of the risk of venous tromboembolism (VTE) in patients who undergo ortopedic surgery. Tools and Methods: Study at an educational research hospital in Ankara 18.07.2018- 19.10. In 2018 there were 140 patients. For the purpose of collecting the data, the patient identifying information form created by the researcher, the patient information form used, the deep venous thrombosis (DVT) detection criteria form, the autar risk detection scale. In the analysis of the data, identifiable statistics such as numbers and percentages were used. Results: In our study Autar DVT Risk Identification Scale found that most patients in the postoperative period have more than one VTE risk factor, the highest age, being over the normal weight, performing an ortopedic (seven) surgery and being very dependent (need to help) risk factors. The study found that 81.4 percent of patients who participated in the study did not know the definition of VTE, 87.8 percent did not know the risk factors for VTE, and 87.8 percent did not know the practices to reduce the risk for VTE. Despite the use of tromboprophylactic methods in the postoperative period, more than half of patients have not been informed about the use of compression socks and about the use of anticoagulant drugs at 80.9%. The result: In our study, it has been found that patients have high levels of lack of information, although they have multiple risk factors in terms of VTE. The determination of patients’ level of knowledge about VTE and the enhancement of their knowledge on this subject by training will allow patients to perform individual assessments, reduce the frequency of VTE in the hospital and post-expedition periods. As a result, the quality of life of patients will be improved, the duration of stay in the hospital and the health expenditure will be reduced.
